DI dalam Surah Al-Zalzalah, Allah menceritakan bagaimana keadaan yang berlaku kepada bumi saat tibanya hari kiamat, maksudnya: “Apabila bumi digegarkan dengan gegaran yang sedahsyat-dahsyatnya. Serta bumi itu mengeluarkan segala isinya , Dan berkatalah manusia (dengan perasaan gerun); “Apa yang sudah terjadi kepada bumi?” Pada hari itu bumi pun menceritakan khabar beritanya: Bahawa Tuhanmu telah memerintahnya (berlaku demikian). Pada hari itu manusia akan keluar berselerak (dari kubur masing-masing) untuk diperlihatkan kepada mereka (balasan) amal-amal mereka. Maka sesiapa berbuat kebajikan seberat zarah, nescaya akan dilihatnya (dalam surat amalnya)! Dan sesiapa berbuat kejahatan seberat zarah, nescaya akan dilihatnya (dalam surat amalnya)!
Daripada Ali bin Ma’bad meriwayatkan daripada Abu Hurairah RA, katanya, Rasulullah SAW telah bersabda: “Apabila Allah selesai menciptakan langit dan bumi, Dia menciptakan sangkakala dan memberikannya kepada malaikat Israfil. Lalu malaikat Israfil memberikannya kepada anak buahnya yang matanya sentiasa memandang ke Arasy menunggu perintah untuk meniupkannya.” Abu Hurairah bertanya kepada Baginda, “Wahai Rasulullah apakah sangkakala itu?” Lalu Baginda menjawab, “Ia sebuah tanduk yang amat besar. Demi diriku yang berada di tangannya, besar lingkaran dan lubangnya seperti lingkaran di antara langit dan bumi, kelak akan ditiup sebanyak tiga kali. Tiupan yang pertama untuk mengejutkan, tiupan kedua akan memusnahkan dan tiupan ketiga untuk membangkitkan semula makhluk untuk menghadap Allah SWT.” Tiupan pertama oleh malaikat Israfil mengejutkan semua makhluk, manusia kebingungan kecuali mereka yang dipilih oleh Allah. Pada waktu itu semuanya datang di dalam keadaan merendah diri, tunduk dan takut kepada Allah. Dan Allah berfirman, “Dan kamu boleh melihat bukit-bukit dan gunung –gunung yang kamu sangkakan kuat sebelum ini, dia akan berterbangan dan seperti awan-awan yang bergerak.” Kemudian Allah berkata, “Semua itu ciptaan Allah yang diciptakan sempurna sebelum saat itu. Sesungguhnya Dia (Allah) maha mengetahui apa yang kamu kerjakan.” Rasulullah menjelaskan keadaan ini berlaku pada hari Jumaat pada pertengahan bulan Ramadan.

Ibu-ibu yang mengandung akan mengalami keguguran dan menurut Rasulullah, wajah anak-anak kecil akan berubah menjadi wajah orang tua dan kelihatan syaitan-syaitan berterbangan melarikan diri sehingga mereka tiba di suatu tempat dan ditangkap oleh para malaikat dan memukul mereka sehingga mati.
Pada ketika itu manusia manusia benar-benar berada di dalam ketakutan dan masing-masing memanggil-manggil di antara satu sama lain. Allah menjelaskan, “Wahai kaum-Ku sesungguhnya aku ini benar-benar bimbang terhadap kamu akan hari siksaan, hari yang masing-masing di dalam keadaan berpaling ke belakang dan berlari. Tidak ada seorang pun yang dapat menyelamatkan diri daripada azab Allah SWT. Siapa yang disesatkan oleh Allah, dia tidak akan diberi petunjuk oleh Allah.” Pada masa itu mereka melihat perkara luar biasa yang tidak pernah disaksikan sebelum ini, ditimpa dengan perasaan mabuk dan mengalami gegaran yang luar biasa dan hanya Allah mengetahui ketakutan mereka pada waktu itu. Kemudian mereka memandang ke arah langit, lalu tiba-tiba langit menjadi cair, matahari dan bulan terbelah, bintang-bintang hancur berkecai dan kemudian langit ditutup untuk mereka. Rasulullah SAW bersabda: “Orang yang sudah mati tidak mengetahui sedikitpun tentang peritiwa itu.” Lalu Abu Hurairah bertanya kepada Rasulullah siapakah yang dikecualikan sebagaimana firman Allah SWT. Rasulullah berkata, “Mereka adalah para syuhada yang sentiasa mendapat rezeki daripada Allah, kejutan bagi mereka yang masih hidup sahaja.” Allah SWT mahukan orang yang merasakan kejahatan mereka pada hari yang amat dahsyat itu memberikan keselamatan bagi para syuhada dan azab kepada mereka yang sentiasa melakukan dosa.
Allah berfirman maksudnya, “Wahai manusia, bertakwalah kamu pada tuhanmu. Sesungguhnya goncangan pada saat hari Allah menutup ala mini, satu benda yang menggemparkan di dalam hidup kamu.” Manusia berada di dalam seperti itu sehingga masa yang diinginkan oleh Allah. Para ulama menceritakan setelah berlakunya tiupan sangkakala yang pertama, manusia berada di dalam ketakutan dan dengan tiupan kedua menyebabkan mereka mula berhamburan dalam kebingungan dan rasa tersiksa. Segala gerak dan aturan alam menjadi hancur, matahari dan bulan musnah berkepingan dan langit terbelah, gugusan langit akan luluh. Alam dipenuhi dengan asap tebal dan awan hitam kegelapan, manusia bertempikan dan mati bergelimpangan tanpa ada satupun yang tersisa di atas muka bumi ini.
Setiap benda di dunia ini semuanya akan hancur, yang kekal hanyalah Allah yang mempunyai ketinggian dan kemuliaan. Firman Allah, “Jangan sekali-kali kamu berdoa dan meminta kepada selain daripada-Ku kerana tidak ada tuhan melainkan Dia.
